The Curious Case of the Release Date & Giveaway

This morning, I spent some time at the Borders in the next town over. I had two coupons for 33% off 1 item that expired today. For those of you who are Borders Rewards Members (this is free) it's possible to get 2 coupons - 1 should arrive in your email; the other can be found by following @Borders on Twitter. The coupons have different codes. If you use them in the store, you'll have to go the register 2 times and use each coupon separately. It works. However, that's not the point of this post.

On my releases list for July 2010, I listed Shadow of the Vampire by Meagan Hatfield as a July 1st release. Online, Borders.com, Amazon.com list the release date as July 1, 2010. BarnesandNoble.com lists the release date as June 29, 2010. Meagan Hatfield, at her website, lists a release date of July 1, 2010.

I asked a Borders employee why the book was already out? I'm sort of obsessive about buying books ON or AFTER their release date. The employee checked their internal system and said it was released last week on June 22, 2010.

So I called Harlequin Books. It is a July title, however stores can sell the book starting June 22, 2010. So no foul on the part of Borders. I picked up a copy. But we all know or have a vague idea that books sold on or during the first week of release are the ones counted for various bestseller lists. And I'll never understand how preorders figure into this. Calculating bestsellers is arcane, I don't understand it, and I never, ever will. This is why I buy on release date if I can. Frankly, they'd save us all a lot of trouble if they started counting sales during the week before release date since so few books have what is called a hard release date. The book in that case can not be placed out for sale before that date.

So because I picked up Shadow of the Vampire early (at least in my mind). I'm going to give away a copy that I will purchase on or shortly after July 1.

Even vampires should never sleep with the enemy.

Vampire princess Alexia Feodorovna has been undead or 125 years, so it's been a while since any man has made her pulse race. Until Declan Black. One look at his bronzed body and a fire like no other consumes her. Then she discovers that he's a dragon lord come to take revenge on the vamps who killed his parents. And claim a crystal said to imbue its owner with incredible powers.

Alexia is ordered to torture and kill the dragon lord. Yet with each reckless encounter, she finds herself consumed by his fiery passion. A passion Declan battles, as well. Will he be able to resist the fire of lust she kindles within him and keep revenge in his heart? Or will he risk everything to quench the burning desire and claim the vampire as his own?

  1. Nope, I tend to wait for a bit until it gets cheap on ebay before buying any book. But yes, I do pay attention to release dates. As in, that is when I start counting until it is a month after the release date that I look in ebay for cheap prizes!

  2. I don't really have the book budget to buy books the day they're released. I usually have the books I want on a wish list and when I have the money or gift certificates, I'll purchase them.

  3. Eeeekkkk... I have them on my side bar as a reminded to myself that I want those books and those are the dates. But I suck. I am normally an organized woman... but when it comes to my books... I suck.

  4. I usually pre-order most of my books. At the book depository they always have them for 25%-50% off before release dates. But I do pay attention to release dates too mostly as a reminder of what books are coming out that I want.

  8. Huh, I'd never heard of the name Declan before Ilona Andrews used it in On the Edge, and here it is again...

If it's a MM release that I care about (read: feel the need to support the author with numbers), I'll try to buy it the first week. But usually my to-be-purchased list is backed up, sadly, so I don't buy them all when I want to. :(

Hard covers are budget dependent. Some I'll buy right away (or even pre-order) while others can languish for awhile.

  9. I tend to pay attention to release dates for purchases because I know it makes a difference for the authors. Poor sales numbers make it harder for them to sell future works to the publishers. Those coupons from Borders happen on a very regular basis and range from 25 to 40 percent off cover at either the store or the website. If a book isn't at the local store, you can use the coupon to order it in with no shipping charge. If you want to support a favorite author, there are ways to do it.

  10. I have the release dates set in my iCal for my fav authors. I try to buy them then, or within the month. I like having first editions. I'm just kinda anal like that. LOL

  11. I read across a number of genres and there are just so many books that get newly published every month that I find it immpossible to buy on or near the release dates. The only exception is sometimes for a series that I have been following when I will try to get hold of the book as soon as finances allow.

Thanks for opening the giveaway to worldwide entries.

  14. Not living in the US or UK release dates are more or less meaningless. Books take ages to reach the local shops. The only books released here on the proper dates were Harry Potter.

And although the main reason I avoid Amazon is the ridiculous shipping charges the books also take 6-16 weeks to get here!

Now I have discovered the Book Depository and my experience so far is that their shipping time is 1-2 weeks so I will probably start paying more attention to release dates.

  16. I'm a pre-order gal ;) I pre-order as soon as I can, then wait impatiently for the book to arrive. As some books are released in the US before the UK, I have also been known to pre-order it from the US & the UK, and then I keep the one that arrives first & give the second one away to spread the joy ;)

  20. If I'm waiting for a book that is a continuation of a series I will preorder it :) We don't always get things the same time as the states though either though so pre orders work well.

  22. Well, the only way I can buy books in English here is by buying them online, so sometimes I pre-order a book from a series I really like, but all my books arrive after the release date.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I tend to wait for the release date because I want my purchase counted towards the author's release numbers so they're one book closer to that next contract. But sometimes I get really excited when I see a new book I really really want and will pick it up if it's out early, but most of the time it's one of those "July releases" that actually has a release date of late June. I find Pocket Books does that a lot.

  27. I keep up with release dates on my favorite authors because I get on the list early at my local library. My budget doesn't allow for lots of book purchases, so winning a new book that no one has read before would be a treat!

  32. To be perfectly honest I am a massive cheapskate.

I wait for books on Book depository to be under $10 before I buy them.

If I have been waiting for a while though and I still REALLY want the book I will buy it if it's under $15.

Since I discovered book depository I have refused point blank to buy books over $15 :D much cheaper for me :D :D and that means more books!

(In Australia - my country - no book is under $14 unless it is battered and second hand)
